Surrounded by spectacular mountains, this unique golf venue was also home to the PGA’s Nationwide Insurance Tour, Gila River Golf Classic for five years.
The two courses, Devil’s Claw and Cattail, are masterpieces developed by Gary Panks covering 500 acres, with 250 acres of turfed area and 250 acres of desert landscape. They will impress and challenge golfers of all levels of players while maintaining a sense of fairness and playability. Featuring pristine and uncluttered views of the Sierra Estrella Mountains, the courses showcase the beauty of the natural terrain.
Both Devil’s Claw and Cattail were created to reflect the land while the waters still flowed on the reservation by combining the Gila River landscape including Cottonwood, Mesquite, Saguaro and Palo Verde trees with native grasses and rolling terrain. AZTROOPERS works throughout communities all over Arizona supporting and promoting safety programs and charitable events such as the Law Enforcement Memorial Program, MADD, Concerned Citizens of Police Survivors, Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish, and Seat Belt Safety Programs. We provide support to many public safety programs throughout Arizona and take pride in our representation at annual memorial services at the capitol in honor of all Arizona law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.
Our tournament provides a tribute to the Arizona State Troopers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. At the tournament, each of our fallen troopers are honored through the dedication of a corporate hole sponsor in their memory. Memorial signs are placed on the t-boxes with a fallen trooper’s name and the sponsor branding. The Memorial Golf Classic also awards annual college scholarships in honor of our fallen troopers and provides much needed support to the families of all troopers. We will be providing 160 gift bags to the golfers which will allow for any of your promotional materials and/or items to be included in these gift bags. All our sponsors are recognized not only at our tournament, but also in the AZTROOPERS Magazine, which is distributed to organizations and individuals nationwide.
Your sponsorships and donations as well as items for our tournament’s raffle, silent auction and door prizes all provide us with the means to put on this event and so much more. The Arizona State Troopers Charities has a 501 C-3 nonprofit organization designation.

Our memorial
To Officers Past – A Tribute
To Officers Present – A Reminder
To Officers Yet to Come – A Legacy
Retired DPS Detective Frank Shankwitz was on a trip to Albany, New York attending a Homicide School. There, was a small museum that he visited while in Albany where he saw a New York trooper statue to honor officers killed in the line of duty. This trip to a small museum created the concept of the DPS Officer Monument and Memorial.
In 1995, the Officer Monument Committee was founded by the AHPA, Associated Highway Patrolmen of Arizona (now the Arizona State Troopers Association), Chaired by Frank Shankwitz with a handful of committee members.
From the time when Frank Shankwitz brought the idea to the association and the first meetings beginning in 1995 to the final dedication ceremony in May there were numerous concerns and obstacles that had to be overcome. The DPS Officer Monument Statue and Memorial walls are a reality today due to the unrelenting dedication of the committee members, the association and its monetary supporters.
Just some of the things your support allows us to do…
Our association works hard everyday to volunteer with other charities that provide valuable resources to people in need. Your donations allow us to continue our work and supply funds to our members in the form of scholarships and donations during times of crisis.
The mission of our Christmas Bears program is to carry out an activity that demonstrates children are the association’s most important responsibility. The tremendous joy that is brought to the hospital patients with the bears is only a part of the benefit that results from the program. It also helps AZTroopers establish a communication mechanism to have children better understand that police officers are helpers & protectors.
We are able to provide financial assistance to law enforcement families in need. We also help our DPS fallen officer’s survivors, from funeral to travel expenses.
