Officer Petersen was in pursuit of a speeding vehicle on State Route 61 near Concho when his patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Just prior to the incident, investigators said another vehicle pulled onto the roadway in front of the officer. Petersen’s patrol car clipped the left front fender of this vehicle before running off the left side of the road, crossing back over the road to the right, then continuing some 150 feet before hitting a tree broadside on the driver’s side. Petersen joined DPS on january 6th, 1985 and was originally assigned to the Yuma District.
