Officer Duthie died the evening of Sept. 5 when his patrol car was swept away by Sycamore Creek flood waters near Sunflower on State Route 87. Officer Duthie and his patrol car were found the following morning. Officer Duthie was the first Arizona Department of Public Safety officer to lose his life in the line of duty. The preceding deaths occurred before the formation of DPS.
