This year’s raffle is over
but we’ll back next year
for our 41st annual helping hands raffle!

How it all started…

Our raffle started in 1983, when Gregg Girard who was the treasurer at the time, had the brilliant idea to hold a raffle. He highly valued a good education and wanted to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships and other services to our members. He knew that scholarships for the member’s children, would put a strain on the general operations fund and more so, it could not be used for this purpose.  He thought long and hard about how the association could fund the scholarships without putting additional financial strain on the members or the association itself. He then came up with the idea of a raffle and suggested it to the board, and as fate would have it, it was approved.

It started as the Arizona Highway Patrol Association Classic Car Raffle. Each year the association would purchase a classic car and raffle it off to the winner. The revenue brought in by the raffle was used to fund scholarships for member children attending colleges at the time.

During those 39 years since, the raffle has proven its value hundreds of times over.  It has not only provided millions of dollars in scholarships to members, but it has helped with many other charitable services that we provide.  Those include financial assistance to law enforcement families in need, like DPS fallen officers’ families, and helping with both funeral and travel expenses. Association members have also delivered comfort bears to sick children at hospitals all over Arizona, and at accident scenes all throughout the state.

On November 7, 2021, Retired Sgt. & Paramedic Gregg Girard passed away.  At that time the board decided to dedicate the raffle in Gregg’s memory and henceforth call it the “Helping Hands Charity Raffle” in memory of Sgt. Gregory Girard. The board also created a scholarship in Gregg’s name awarded to a special applicant each year moving forward.

Gregg’s time with the association started way back in 1978, when he became a member. He then was elected as the treasurer for 11 years and served many years more as a representative on its board.  He stayed active in the association and especially the raffle until his death. Through the “Helping Hands Charity Raffle”, Gregg’s legacy will be remembered and deeply felt for many years to come.

You can help us make a difference

We’ve held our raffle annually for 40 years now and each year we’re able to make a tremendous impact with your support.

Our annual raffle allows us to donate thousands of dollars each year to needing charities and help extend the effective reach of our members to other organizations. Even though the Grand Prize is large, the ticket price is still small – twenty bucks is a small price to pay for an opportunity to win a $25,000, $2,000, $1,500, $1,000 or a $500 cash prize! We are excited to continue the opportunity to buy five (5) raffle tickets and get TWO (2) FREE! You can buy this combination of tickets (5+ 2 free) as many times as you desire! The mission for our annual fundraiser is to utilize the great reputation of Arizona’s finest at the Department of Public Safety to enhance the well-being of our communities. Since 1993, AZTroopers has granted nearly $1 million to local non-profit organizations and police families because of your participation in the raffle!

The association presented 15 scholarships to the children of members attending Arizona colleges in 2022.  Additional scholarships are a needed for our college-bound children as each year the number of applicants increases.

Money from the raffle is also able to provide financial assistance to law enforcement families in need. It has helped our DPS fallen officer survivors pay for funeral and travel expenses. AZTroopers members are also able to deliver comfort bears to sick children all over the state of Arizona especially during the Christmas holidays. Raffle funds additionally go to other non-profits and causes that have a positive impact on law enforcement and Arizona.

The drawing is held in December each year at the AZTroopers board  meeting. You do not need to be present to win!

Thank you to the AZTroopers members who put the scholarships together every year and those who contribute.  It might seem like just a check, but it is education and a future to the ones receiving it.”
