Eight months after starting work with the Riverside (IL) Police Department, Officer Chris Kudla was diagnosed with a rare form of stage four kidney cancer.
He told his chief that although he would have to attend doctor’s appointments and chemotherapy sessions twice a month, he did not want to stop working.
Chief Tom Weitzel told him that they would try to make it work.
One problem: with only eight months with the agency, Kudla had not amassed enough sick days to accommodate all of his chemotherapy sessions.
His fellow officers began donating their sick days to Kudla, and soon after word got out, other village employees did the same. Kudla now has a full six months of sick time, according to CBS News.
Kudla’s fellow officers have also started a GoFundMe page.
