FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — A Fayette County sheriff’s deputy who was shot in the face last week while trying to arrest a wanted felon is getting better, but faces a long road to recovery and possible blindness, authorities said Monday.
Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek said in a statement Monday that Deputy Calvin “CJ” Lehmann, a 32-year-old single father of three girls, lost his left eye as a result of a shotgun blast to the face, and that doctors were still trying to save his right eye.
Korenek said Lehmann is scheduled for surgery later this week.
While doctors at Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin care for Lehmann, the sheriff’s office is taking donations from the public to help cover his medical expenses.
Korenek said any legitimate fundraiser for Lehmann will be posted to the Fayette County Deputy CJ Lehmann Benevolent Fund Facebook page.
Donations can be made online or at the Fayette County sheriff’s office at 1646 Jefferson St. in La Grange.
Authorities ask that all donations include “For CJ” in the memo portion.
