COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County sheriff’s deputy jumped into action on Wednesday to save a dog that had fallen into a frozen pond.
On Wednesday afternoon, Lt. Edward Schillig was called to a pond off Amity Road in Prairie Township near Galloway. Schillig, who is on the sheriff’s office dive team, saw the dog and immediately got out his dive equipment to get to the animal as other officers headed to the scene.
The dog, named Jake, was struggling in the water and making noises indicating its discomfort.
Schillig and other deputies, as well as members of the Prairie Township Fire Department, got Jake out of the water and into the back of a cruiser to begin warming up.
An emergency squad transported Jake to MedVet in Hilliard to be treated for hypothermia.
Jake was kept at the animal hospital overnight for observation and taken home, where he is reportedly back to his normal self. Jake is believed to have gone into the pond while chasing a duck.

THANK YOU OFFICERS FOR RESCUING THIS EMACIATED PUP! This morning officers on the city’s south side received a call of a dog tied outside in these below freezing temperatures. Officers found out the owner was hospitalized and family would occasionally stop by to feed the dog. That’s unacceptable in extreme weather like this. The officers loaded the pup into a cruiser, brought him to the police substation where they fed him and after a lot of loving on him they took this sweet baby to the Columbus Humane. We know he will find a forever home! ? ? ?. Investigation underway. #columbus #police #dog #rescuedog #polarvortex
