COLD SPRING, Ky. — A Kentucky woman’s life was changed thanks to an officer who went beyond the call of duty to help her.

On Tuesday, 60-year-old Vickie Ashcraft was going to a Boost Mobile store to pay her phone bill, but she wasn’t able to catch her typical bus route, so she, along with her service dog, traveled to the store via her electric scooter, FOX 19 reports. Her 2.5 mile trip took four hours as her scooter malfunctioned on the way there.

By the time she made it out it to the store, her scooter died. She reached out to police and met Cold Spring Police Sgt. Andy Hyett, who responded to the call and gave her and her dog a ride home.

After dropping Ashcraft off, Hyett said he was left with lingering concerns about the woman’s safety since the scooter wasn’t in good condition.

“I told her about me being worried for her safety, and I just felt that chair wasn’t good enough,” Hyett said.

The sergeant reached out to Patient Aids and told the manager about the woman’s story. The company agreed to donate a brand new scooter to the Cold Spring PD.

Hyett and his chief returned to Ashcraft’s home to surprise her with the new set of wheels.

“He pulled it up and there was my (new) scooter, two pieces, and I was like oh my God,” Ashcraft said.

Ashcraft was grateful for the officer’s kind gesture and said the LEO helped changed her life.

“My life is so much richer tonight. It’s not because I got a new scooter,” Ashcraft said. “I’ve got new transportation, but I have a young man in my life who truly, he saved my life.”

Hyett said it’s a moment he’ll never forget.

“I’m a police officer. I’ve been a police officer for 24 years now,” Hyett told WKRC. “You just know when someone really needs your help and the more that you can do you just try to do it. I’m just glad we were able to help her out.”
