A new policy for NYPD officers took effect on Saturday that essentially allows people to smoke marijuana in public without fear of arrest, according to NCB News.
The NYPD will now issue summonses resulting in fines of $100—not conduct arrests—for smoking marijuana in public or possessing up to 25 grams of the drug.
There are still cases where officers would arrest pot smokers, such as those with an outstanding warrant, people on parole or probation, those with a history of violence or who are deemed a public threat.
