Governor Brewer Signs into Law Public Safety Spousal Benefits Bill – H.B. 2204
Families of fallen officers & firefighters not forgotten
House Bill 2204 helps to continue health care benefits to families that have lost a police officer, firefighter, or corrections officer in the line of duty. Sgt. Jimmy Chavez, the Arizona Highway Patrol Association (AHPA) and Arizona Police Association (APA) President, testified and signed in supporting this important piece of public safety legislation. The bill was signed into law last Friday by Governor Janice Brewer.
“When an officer has paid the ultimate sacrifice, less red tape is needed to support the families of fallen police officers and firefighters,” states Sgt. Chavez. “Families can be distraught and financially impacted after the loss of a hero. They should never be forgotten.”
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (www.nleomf.org), 251 Arizona peace officers have been killed in the line of duty since the statehood. Twenty-eight (28) heroes lost their lives from Arizona’s Department of Public Safety (DPS).
AHPA and APA signed in for support of the bill (on behalf of the police employees and families they represent) during Arizona’s legislative session.
Police representatives attended the bill signing Friday, April 5, 2013, and personally thanked Governor Brewer. The AHPA appreciates the efforts of Representative Bob Robson and the other sponsors for their support of HB 2204. Information about the bill can be found at here: HB 2204.
