RALEIGH, Miss. — A Mississippi officer was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday.
WAPT reported that Officer E.P. Morris was on a highway when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. Details about the crash, including the cause, were not immediately released.
Morris served for the Raleigh Police Department for less than two years, and has worked in law enforcement for many years. Raleigh City Attorney David Garner called Morris’s death “tragic” and said it was “a loss for the entire community,” according to the Clarion Ledger.
“He was a kind man who had a spirit of service,” Garner said. “He was one of these guys that had a sweet spirit of service about him and he really enjoyed working with people.”
Smith County Sheriff Charlie Crumpton confirmed that Morris was on duty at the time of the accident.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is working to determine the cause of the crash.
