Smith was injured on Dec. 6 after responding to a disturbance at a dentist’s office. During the call, Smith was speaking with 53-year-old Dimaggio McNelly, when the suspect became combative. Smith fired his stun gun multiple times, but it had no effect.
During the struggle, Smith’s gun went off, striking both men. It’s not clear whose finger was on the trigger.
McNelly was killed at the scene.
Smith was a 7-year veteran with the department.
