Phoenix — The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) has received $58,000 in federal funds, specifically to help with expenses for troopers taking part in various training programs designed to help detect impaired drivers.

The training programs include:

  • Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN)
  • Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)
  • Advanced Roadside Impaired Driver Enforcement training course (ARIDE)
  • Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) certification course
  • DRE Instructor certification course
  • Drug Impairment for Educational Professionals (DITEP) program
  • Forensic Phlebotomy program

The money will specifically be used to defray travel costs as troopers travel across the state to attend and in many cases, serve as instructors in these classes. As an assist agency, AZDPS receives requests regularly to facilitate SFST, ARIDE and other related courses statewide. The grant funding allows troopers to support other public safety agencies.  The funds will help with overtime costs which provide troopers with additional opportunities to attend impaired driving related training.

“The Arizona Department of Public Safety is grateful for the continued partnership with Director Alberto Gutier and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. GOHS’s continued commitment toward highway safety in Arizona means AZDPS can continue to provide enhanced enforcement efforts as well as providing our troopers with specialized equipment that supports public safety in Arizona,” said Lt. Colonel Wayde Webb, Assistant Director.
