SAVANNAH, Ga. — A Georgia police department is mourning the loss of one of their own after an officer was killed in a crash while on duty.
The Island Packet reports that Savannah Officer Anthony Christie was killed while responding to a wreck early Friday morning. Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Chris Nease told WJCL Christie was inside his vehicle, which was parked crossing the lanes of traffic, when a tractor trailer struck his vehicle from the passenger side.
Nease said Christie’s blue lights were on, but the driver of the tractor trailer told police he didn’t see the patrol car. Nease said it’s unknown if Christie died on the scene or on the way to the hospital.
Christie had been with the Savannah Police Department for about 2 and a half years. He leaves behind a wife.
“Most of the time I start off with, ‘It’s a great day to be in the City of Savannah,’ but it’s a sad day to be in the City of Savannah today,” Mayor Eddie DeLoach said. “We grieve with his wife, Nicole. We grieve with his family who he’s left behind. We grieve for our community.”
The crash remains under investigation.
