ASCENSION PARISH, La. — The daughter of one of the officers killed in the 2016 Baton Rouge ambush received a special escort to a school dance.

WAFB reports that 4-year-old Fynleigh Gerald, daughter of Officer Matthew Gerald, was preparing to go to her first dance. But the event was a father-daughter dance.

In absence of her father, nine men from the fallen officer’s squad suited up in uniform and escorted her to the event with her mother, brother and grandparents at her side.

“It’s sweet, but it’s bittersweet because I know it’s the first time Fynleigh is going to go to a dance and her daddy isn’t here,” said Gerald’s widow, Dechia.

Matthew was one of three officers killed in the 2016 Baton Rouge ambush. Cpl. Brad Barr said though he wishes her father’s death wasn’t the reason they had to escort her, he said he and the other officers were “honored to do it.”

“It’s never ending. Matt is gone, but we will always step up and always do whatever we can whenever we can for as long as we can and forever,” Barr said.
