Daniel Novasad has been sentenced to nearly 40 years in prison for the 2007 shooting of DPS officer Kyle DeForest, County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today.
On July 5th, 2007 while on probation and while driving a stolen motorcycle, Daniel Novasad (DOB 05/24/87) fled from Department of Public Safety Officer Kyle DeForest near 99th Avenue and Grand. Novasad was stopped but later fled on foot. That’s when the defendant shot at the DPS officer 6 times, striking him four times. Novasad was later captured. Officer DeForest survived the attack and hopes to eventually return to active duty.
On November 30th, 2007 Novasad pled guilty to:
- Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer
- Misconduct Involving Weapons
- Theft (Motorcycle)
- Unlawful Flight from a Law Enforcement Officer
- Residential Burglary (an unrelated incident.)
Novasad was sentenced January 25th, 2008 by Judge Rosa Mroz. Deputy County Attorney Bob Shutts prosecuted the case.
Thomas stated, “Our office is pleased Officer DeForest is on the road to recovery. We are also pleased that the man who attacked this public servant will be spending a very long time behind bars.”
