A Colorado man was fatally shot by police after he was mistaken for a burglar, according to USA Today.
Aurora police had responded to a call from a woman who said a man was breaking into her house.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers heard gunshots. Unbeknownst to them, a male resident of the home had just fatally shot an intruder. Officers entered the building, encountered an armed man, and shot him.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries.
“This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved,” said Nick Metz, police chief with the Aurora Police Department, in a statement. “We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very difficult time.”
