GUEST SPEAKER: Tom Horne

Tom Horne addressed the Board on his running for Arizona Attorney General in 2010.  Mr. Horne is currently the Superintendent of Public Schools.  He has served in the legislature for 4 years.  He stated he is a strong supporter of law enforcement.

LEGAL COUNSEL REPORT:

Mike Napier addressed the Board on several issues:

a)    Has been meeting with Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and wants to increase coverage provided by them.  He is proposing we offer coverage for Workman’s Comp effective May 1st.  The cost would be $2.00 per member, per month.  This would be an 18 month pilot with Tempe Police Association & Mesa Police Association, with AHPA to participate.  After/during the 18 months, the premium cost & case load to LDF will be evaluated.

b)    Mr. Napier is offering a reduction of $2.00 per member per month in his fees.

Membership – working on members survey, will be sent out shortly

CALIFORNIA CASUALTY REPORT:

George Shapcott, State Account Manager & Shelby Lister Field marketing Manager, addressed the Board on the annual status report on California Casualty.

OLD BUSINESS:

President Chavez advised that the Association Pay Study was given to the Department’s executive staff last Monday.  Presentation pending before the legislative parties.

NEW BUSINESS:

President Chavez addressed the Board on two issues:

a)  Received a rough draft from a PR firm

b)  APA dues dropped approximately $4,000.00

President Jimmy Chavez had to leave to attend the Association Bass Derby at Alamo Lake.  Executive Vice-President Bob Gilbert took over duties of conducting the meeting.

c)  Police memorial at the Headquarters will be at 0900

Hours on May 4th.  Governor Jan Brewer & Director Roger Vanderpool will be speaking. After the ceremony, a luncheon will be held at the Phoenix Mountain Preserve starting at approximately 1030 hours.

DISTRICT REPORTS:

Executive Staff – Colleen Girard advised she has been working on the flyers & tickets for this year’s raffle.  Been working on the invitations for the officer memorial luncheon.

District 7 – Raul Garcia Jr, advised there are 4 new motor officers, 3 in Phoenix & 1 in Tucson. Sgt. Kenyon retired.

District 3 – Jim Bee advised dust storms have been keeping the district busy between Flagstaff & Winslow.  I-40 has been shut down on several occasions due to dust and collisions.

Civilian Southern – Celina Murrieta-Gonzales reported on Dispatchers Week, encouraged employees to stop in their respective centers.
