DEATHS – LINE OF DUTY / FAMILY:

Robereta Shaeffer , former District One Office Coordinator, passed away on March 27, 2008.

Retired Sworn Patrick H. McCollum Badge @10, passed away on April 6, 2008.

Commander Bobby Holiday’s mother passed away on April 14, 2008.

Since the first of the year there have been 30 Police Officers killed in the line of duty nationally.  Three Officers have died since the last meeting.

Two were killed in automobile collisions

One died from a heart attack.

a)  State Budget still being worked on

1)  Sworn Officer pay still in the budget

2)  No pay increase for State employees

b)  Cost of health insurance increase still be worked on

c)  House Bill 2116 CORP – going to the floor next week

d) Redaction Bill – notice will be sent out prior to 6 months end of protection.

e) RICO Bill – moving to the floor

Dave Schroder advised the Board he had spent $139.14 for the velvet boxes and coin holders to be used at the Department’s Officer Memorial service.

Candidate for Maricopa County Attorney addressed the Board.  Former General Counsel for Governor Napolitano & Special Counsel for Arizona Attorney General Office.

GUEST SPEAKER: Chief Jack Lane

Chief Lane addressed the Board on several issues:

1.  There is 1 Lt & 4 Sgt openings right now, more to follow

2.  This week is National Dispatcher Week

3.  Department Budget

a)  Governor still wants to finish our pay parity, looking at 2.5 to 3 million.

b)  State hiring freeze, hurting civilian hires and promotions

4.  Uniforms

a)  50 orders a day are being sent out

b)  Contact Superior Uniforms on complaints

c)  After first delivery, orders should take two week turn-around

5.  MDC Update

a)  District 1-3-4-9 should be up by July

b)  GPS system has a problem with the software

6.  COTS

a)  New electronic system should be in place by June

7.  More rifle schools planned

8.  There are cadets in the system, between new cadets to advance basic.

9.  Motors – looking at Honda or Harley to replace BMW’s

10. Off-duty work – Department looking at 3rd party running the

system, Director would like the Department to get out of

this issue due to time spent running the program.

11. Body Armor – Department now using the NIJ standards since the Colorado standards are no longer there.

Greg Robinson reported on the following matters:

1)   Due to a very late member’s loan not being paid back to the Association, Lawsuit was filed with default judgment

2)   Reviewed and sent out By-law changes to By-law committee.

a)    Assisted Department employee with collision issues, contacted Mike Napier’s office.

Civilian Central Zone III – Chris Ramsey

a)    Advised the Board that Officer Clark, involved in a vehicle/pedestrian collision had sustained 6 broken ribs.

Executive Officer – Pat Eagan

a)  Advised the Board he had posted the information on our webpage on the Phoenix PD class on Spanish for Law Enforcement.

District 7 – Raul Garcia Jr

a)  Advised the Board that there were 9 new motors Officers

b)  One sustained a crash in the long ride

c)  Motors had several other crashes since last meeting

FINANCIAL ADVISOR: THOMAS JONOVICH,

Mr. Jonovich advised the Board on the status of our various accounts in the current Market. Information classes will be held in Prescott, Yuma & Benson.  DROP rate is at 8.5%, anyone looking at entering DROPS should consider this due to the interest rate dropping in July.

GUEST SPEAKER: Pinal Sheriff Chris Vasquez

Sheriff Vasquez addressed the Board on his candidacy for re-election.  Sheriff Vasquez advised of the improvements he has made since he was elected and what he would like to improve in the future.

OLD BUSINESS:

President Jimmy Chavez advised the Board on the off-duty committee:

a)    Three areas of the off-duty program

1)  accountability

2)  fairness of work

3)  electronic system in place

b)    Executive staff would like the Department to get out of this program, due to the time & resources involved.

c)    Secondary manual being re-wrote

Dave Schroder had posted for display the new Association banners.

NEW BUSINESS:

Dave Schroder addressed the Board on the Association cabin.  Improvements will be bided out for raising the cabin for a new foundation and floor installed.

REQUEST FOR FUNDING:

President Chavez presented to the Board a request to fund refreshments for the three award ceremonies in May.  Motion made by Dave Schroder to fund $500.00, seconded by Celina Murrieta-Gonzalez. Motion Carried.
