The Arizona Highway Patrol Association (AHPA) firmly assert their support for Sgt. Tom Lovejoy, a Chandler police officer who is currently facing criminal charges in the accidental death of his service canine, Bandit.
“We believe this was an extremely unfortunate accident,” said AHPA President Jimmy Chavez, “and the Sheriff has made a bad situation worse by exploiting Sgt. Lovejoy and Bandit’s memory in a shameful grab for media attention.”
The organization, which represents Department of Public Safety officers statewide, joins the Chandler Law Enforcement Association (CPLEA) in their support for the accused officer.
Both organizations conclude that Sgt. Lovejoy has cooperated fully with the investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) but has been treated unfairly and denied a lack of due process by the Sheriff’s Office.
